Leap of Faith Paperback book cover

Leap of Faith

A Paperback Book Cover Design

Some times you just have to take a leap of faith and come up with an epic cover art for an epic novel!

Here is another powerful environment concept done using Adobe Photoshop.

I’m proud of the way the blue glow wraps around the two figures. Did I mention this tunnel scene was originally not frozen, To get the frozen look I used Photoshop’s adjustment layers.

This was then converted to Affinity Photo

If you would like to see my process of how I created this concept it’s documented below.

If you would like to read this book go check it out. It's available at multiple retailers. The button below will take you to them.

The Template

Sets the size required for the book

When you are making a book cover you nees to get the size right. The print-on-demand publisher will provide a template for this. The template shows where text and images should be placed and sets the size of the book spine.

The actual template is much bigger but I've cropped it here to show only the area which is important.

The image source

An open rights image

I started with an image of a tunnel.

It's important that any images you use are copyright free and available to modify and use commercially.

Customizing the image

Bigger, colourised and added character silhouettes

The image wasn't big enough so the clone tool was used to extend the image to cover the area required. silhouettes of the woman and boy were added. To portray excitement the boy was made to appear jumping.

A blue glow was added to represent the portal mentioned in the book and the tunnel walls were colourised.

A shadow was created.

Added Text

Title, Author names, Spine and back matter

A suitable text1 1was used for the title font with a matching drop shadow on the top line

Blue bars were added on which the series and author names were placed. These matched the other books in the series. It's important that the author names should still be readable at retailer thumbnail sized images.

Spine and back text was added. Care must be taken not to add any text outside the allowed areas or in the box where a barcode will be added with the book ISBN number.

All the books in this series have a Triplet family crest added to the spine

Triplet Crest

Rear text

Making it a little easier to read

The text on the rear cover didn't stand out well against the background. To make it more visible a semi-transparent layer as added between the text and the background image. The edges of this white rectangle were feathered to make this layer itself less noticable.
